Answer by: Hsiang (05/17/11)
Question: I am build a 4080 sq ft steel building. One end wall is required to be 1 hour fire rated. The columns are c channel with girts bolted in. 4" insulation is under the outside sheet metal wall.
What is the most cost effective method - UL rated - method of constructing this fire wall. Please provide the UL code# for supporting your method.
Thaks, Jerry
Answer: Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your question,
I can make some suggestions but unfortunately the selection of a UL rated assembly for your rated wall is more involving and is beyond what I can cover in this format.
The simplest and usually the cheapest 1 hour rated assembly is a wall consist of one layer of gypsum board on both side of a metal stud wall (or sheathing on one side if its exterior). But there’s a lot of ifs; like if there are not a lot of penetrations, if a durable surface is not required and if no moisture is involved.
Assuming that all of these variables are true then you should be looking at the range of assemblies V400-V499, depending on your exterior cladding material, the type of fireproofing for your steel structure etc.
