RAKESH KUMAR: addition on cantilevered Balcony
Answer by: Hsiang (03/31/11)
Question: Hi.... I have a cantilevered Balcony attached to my Bedroom. I want to know how much weight can this stand safely. The size of the cantilevered Balcony is 7'*12 Ft. Can I cover it with a Tin roof and Glazed Windows. Thanking you. Regards ...Rakesh
Answer: Hi Rakesh,

Thank you very much for your question,

Unfortunately I’ll need a lot more information in order to provide you with any meaningful answer, thing such as the type of structure that is supporting your balcony, size and spacing of support members and weight of your propose addition etc. Even in the instance where I have the necessary information, structural calculations are typically the province of structural engineers rather than us architects.

Since I as well as any other US based architects will likely not be familiar with the building methods and materials in India I would advise you instead to seek opinions from your local builders. They will probably have a much better ideas as to whether or not what you have in mind will work.

Good luck on your addition,
