Madhu: Effectiveness of Iconic designs and its impact on the surroundings
Answer by: Hsiang (03/07/11)
Question: Am doing my masters in architecture(Urban design). Thesis topic which am doing is Exploring the Effectiveness of Iconic designs and its impact on the surroundings. please give me some ideas regarding the topic and and to continue with it. The site which i have selected is Mumbai.
Answer: Hi Madhu,
Thank you for your question,
I took my time in getting back to you in the hope that you had formed your own ideas regarding your thesis project, same as my own thesis advisor had done when I was in school, which I had only come to appreciate later on.
If I were to approach the same thesis topic, I would in fact select two sites instead of just one, a site with said iconic design and one without. My reason being that like most science and medical experiment, I think it is important to have a control group. By simply looking at a single site, how will you be able to tell the effect an iconic architectural project will have from the natural evolution of an urban landscape?
Another idea would be; instead of looking for differences, you can also find a second iconic site and attempt to find similar influences the architectural intervention has on their surround neighborhood.
It is a rather wide topic and I am sure you would have thought of several other approaches in addition to my suggestion.
